P-Noy reminisces on good old days at Araneta

MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino reminisced about his good old days at the Araneta Center as he led the celebration of its 60th anniversary on Friday.

In his speech, Aquino remembered how his late father, former senator Ninoy Aquino, would bring him – then a grade schooler – to the Araneta Coliseum to watch boxing matches and bet on their results.

He also remembered shopping for school bags at National Bookstore’s Cubao branch as well as shoes in Shoemart or Marikina Shoe Expo.

The President looked back at some of his happy memories at the Fiesta Carnival to be followed by snacks at Nena’s Bibingka with his mother, former President Corazon Aquino.

He said it was in 1961 when his family transferred to Quezon City.

During his speech, Aquino had coughing fits and had to drink water several times. He later showed reporters his cell phone case with the “It’s more fun in the Philippines” design.

Araneta Center is owned by the family of Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, the presumptive standard bearer and “sentimental choice” of the ruling Liberal Party in 2016.

Aquino commended the Aranetas for being innovative and embracing change as they ventured into something that could provide more opportunities for the people.

The President noted the significant change at the Araneta Center, where a world-class business process outsourcing building had been built.

He said the center’s transformation was borne out of love by the Araneta family for Cubao and how they used it to change other people’s lives as well.
