LTFRB sets public hearing for online-enabled transport services

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has scheduled a public hearing on the operations of online-enabled transportation services such as Uber.

In a notice published in The STAR yesterday, LTFRB said a public hearing on the matter will be conducted at its head office at 9 a.m. on Monday.

In addition to Uber, the LTFRB said the hearing will also cover operations of other online-enabled transportation services such as Grab Taxi, Easy Taxi, Tripid and Tripda, among others.

Uber previously butted heads with LTFRB over its operations due to a lack of franchise.

The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) has since set a meeting between LTFRB and Uber officials to discuss issues on modern technology solutions for land transportation.

Representatives from the transportation application were also invited to attend a meeting of the transportation committee of the House of Representatives.

In a statement on Wednesday, Uber spokesperson Karun Arya said they appreciate the opportunity to discuss ways their platform can benefit the transportation sector in the country.

“Our technology – a platform that connects riders and drivers – offers superior standards of safety, reliability and accountability, gives consumers greater choice, and creates economic opportunity for drivers,” Arya said.

“We look forward to continuing working with legislators and government agencies, including the DOTC, the LTFRB, the Metro Manila Development Authority and other key agencies, to develop a framework which will allow us to continue providing our service and contributing to a superior transportation environment for the people of Metro Manila,” the Uber spokesperson added.

In its notice of hearing, the LTFRB reminded the public that it is unlawful for any individual or corporation to engage in any public service business without first securing a certificate of public convenience.

It added that motor vehicles registered as “private” shall not be used for hire under any circumstance based on the Land Transportation and Traffic Code.
