Cop, fugitive killed in Navotas encounter

MANILA, Philippines - A police officer and one of the most wanted criminals in the northern part of Metro Manila were killed in an encounter in Navotas City early yesterday morning.

Operatives of the Northern Police District and National Capital Region-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group were supposed to serve a warrant for the arrest of Raymond Mangali when the exchange of fire occurred.

Mangali and Senior Police Officer Hector Laceda, 51, died at the scene, according to Navotas police chief Senior Superintendent Conrado Gongon Jr.

Another policeman, Senior Police Officer Juan Fernando, 42, was wounded and taken to the Manila Central University Hospital for treatment.

Gongon said another police officer was hit by a bullet, but did not sustain injuries as he was wearing a bulletproof vest.

The incident happened at around 3:30 a.m. at the suspect’s safehouse along Sampaguita street in Barangay Tanza.

Gongon said Mangali had outstanding arrest warrants for murder in Malabon, Valenzuela and Navotas.

Police said the suspect was the leader of a gun for hire group operating in the area.

A .45 caliber pistol and two carbine rifles were recovered from the scene.
