PLDT, Globe networks normal despite heavy rains

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) and Ayala-led Globe Telecom Inc. reported yesterday that their respective telecommunications networks are working normally amid the heavy rains brought by Tropical Storm Mario.

In an advisory, PLDT said its Smart and Sun Cellular network services remain fully available even though a few sites in flooded areas were affected by power shutdowns.

“Rains are still expected over the weekend so we encourage the public to keep their mobile phones, radios and emergency lights fully charged and to be ready with their own emergency supplies,” the company said.

To provide assistance to communities affected by Mario, Smart and Sun Cellular have opened Libreng Tawag Centers for affected residents in Tonsuya Elementary School, Malabon City; Sto. Domingo Church, Quezon City and Maybunga covered court in Pasig City. More Libreng Tawag Centers are expected to be opened later.

Smart and Sun has also joined Tulong Kapatid Foundation and PLDT-Smart Foundation in conducting relief efforts for affected communities.

On the other hand, Globe said its network remains fully operational and there is no reported network disruption in the National Capital Region, which is heavily affected by flooding.

Globe also initiated its public service drive in social media through #StaySafePH, which shares valuable tips and information on how to be safe during times like these. Selected Globe stores in Metro Manila have also offered free charging for customers’ mobile phones and gadgets. 

Still, the telecommunications provider said it is closely monitoring its network facilities in areas affected by heavy rains and technical personnel are ready to attend to any service disruption.
