Marikina puts up Braille tiles along sidewalks

Non Alquitran - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The city government of Marikina is installing Braille tiles on ramps situated along the city’s sidewalks to guarantee the safety of persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The first batch of Braille tile installations is on the sidewalks of the Marikina sports center, city health center, Marikina public market and the city hall compound.

Several sidewalks, and those found at the major intersections in District 2, are currently undergoing assessment. If the measurements are found appropriate, Braille tiles will be installed there as well, the city government said.

A form of tactile paving, the endeavor intends to utilize Braille tile’s textured surface as an indicator that cautions pedestrians with disability, specifically the visually impaired, as they approach or descends the streets.

“It is hard to imagine the difficulties PWDs, particularly the blind and visually impaired, experience when crossing the streets. Most of the time, they have to find safer ways to cross since majority are unable to hire a guide to assist them,” said persons with disability affairs office head Gil Flores. “These Braille installations will serve as an indicator that will caution them as they approach the street.”
