MMDA offers seedlings to replace typhoon-damaged trees

MANILA, Philippines - Residents of Metro Manila may now replace their trees felled by Typhoon Glenda with fire tree seedlings offered by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), an official said yesterday.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said in his weekly show at radio station dzBB that the “replace your tree program” will be available to residents with fallen trees in their compounds.

He said damaged trees will be hauled by MMDA workers and turned over to the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, which will use the wood for school desks and other furniture.

Recipients of the seedlings must sign a memorandum of agreement with the MMDA that they will take care of the fire tree for 30 years, Tolentino said.

He added that fire trees can withstand strong winds.

The MMDA reported that it has collected approximately 360 tons of uprooted trees and fallen branches in various parts of Metro Manila after Glenda pummeled the country last week.
