QC allots P31 M for underpass elevator

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Quezon City government has allotted more than P31 million for the rehabilitation and installation of elevators at the underpass connecting the city hall and the Quezon Memorial Circle (QMC).

Bid documents published on the local government’s website showed that the project was awarded to EFC Enterprises. The contract cost was P31.577 million, slightly lower than the approved P31.588 million budget.

The notice of award said the contract is effective from Jan. 9 to May 9. Rehabilitation works started on Feb. 1, which resulted in the temporary closure of the underpass.

A separate release from the local government said the rehabilitation and installation of elevators are expected to last for six months, with the elevators operational by August. It said a guardhouse will also be constructed in the area.

Mayor Herbert Bautista said the project seeks to give persons with disabilities and senior citizens more access to the QMC, which is also undergoing improvement with the recent opening of the Quezon Heritage House and the ongoing construction of the Quezon City museum.

“With the ongoing passageway’s improvement, the city government is optimistic that all sectors will be served better and more pedestrians will be able to go comfortably to the circle from the city hall,” said Bautista in a statement.

The department of public order and safety deployed traffic personnel to assist pedestrians crossing Elliptical Road to reach QMC or the city hall while the underpass is undergoing rehabilitation.
