Manila imposes daytime truck ban

Jose Rodel Clapano - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Manila will ban eight-wheeler trucks from traveling the city’s streets from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. starting on Monday, Mayor Joseph Estrada said yesterday.

In a press conference, Estrada signed Ordinance 7570, which amends Ordinance 8092 or the city’s Traffic Management Code.

He said violators of the daytime truck ban will be fined P5,000 and their vehicles impounded.

Estrada said that from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., the eight-wheeler trucks will be allowed to go through Roxas Boulevard and their regular routes.

He said the truck ban is the second reform his administration is implementing to rid Manila of traffic gridlocks, following the bus ban.

“The next reform will be the jeepneys and then the tricycles,” Estrada said.

Vice Mayor Isko Moreno said trucks carrying perishable goods and aviation fuel will be exempt from the truck ban.
