Bilibid brawl leaves 1 inmate dead

MANILA, Philippines - An inmate was killed after a brawl erupted at the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa Thursday afternoon.

Arcajerhes Cardino, a member of the Guinin Ilocano gang, was reportedly stabbed dead by a certain “Rodel” of the Batang City Jail gang.

A source from the Department of Justice said Cardino was killed after he allegedly failed to remit earnings from their illegal drug trade at the NBP.

The incident happened at 2 p.m. but was reported to the police two hours later.

Sources said it was Cardino who first attacked Rodel but the latter managed to grab the knife and lunged it at the victim, causing his death.

The brawl came amid the expose on the alleged privileges being given to high profile inmates.

The STAR earlier reported that the maximum security compound, supposedly a heavily guarded area at the NBP, has turned into a “high-end subdivision” where wealthy inmates can afford to drive golf carts inside the 12-hectare penitentiary.

The compound is near the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) director’s office and outside its gates is the office of the superintendent.

BuCor is under the direct supervision of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima.
