Businessman may lose license for road rage killing

Reinir Padua - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A businessman from Quezon City is in danger of losing his driver’s license after he allegedly shot and killed a bus driver in a fit of road rage at the boundary of Tarlac and Pangasinan, a Land Transportation Office (LTO) official said yesterday.

LTO Region 1 Director Teofilo Guadiz III said he immediately instructed LTO enforcers to secure a copy of the police report of Saturday’s incident involving Frederick dela Cruz, 35.

â€œThis will be the basis for the revocation of Dela Cruz’s license,” Guadiz said.

Police identified the victim as Joseph Villacorta, driver of a Metro Manila-bound Solid North Bus and resident of Urdaneta City. The incident happened along the national highway near the boundary of Rosales, Pangasinan and San Manuel, Tarlac.

Guadiz said cases of road rage are enough cause for authorities to study the possibility of requiring psychological examination for driver’s license applicants. He noted that individuals having trouble managing their anger and frustration are likely to be involved in road rage attacks, especially if they have access to a gun.

He said individuals with anger management issues should seek help from an expert and stay away from guns.

Dela Cruz, who resides in Caloocan City, fled after the incident but policemen intercepted him and his wife, Ma. Catherine.
