Regular assessment of public schools pushed

MANILA, Philippines - A Quezon City councilor is proposing regularly assessing the performance of public elementary and secondary schools in the city to ensure their delivery of quality education.

In her proposed measure, fifth district councilor Julienne Alyson Rae Medalla said the evaluation will help identify challenges to the effective delivery of educational services in the city’s public schools and formulate programs to address them.

The assessment will cover the performance of the teachers; the provision of school facilities, equipment, and instructional materials; and the achievement level of the students.

Medalla said the evaluation may be undertaken through classroom observations and interviews with school officials and students. The achievement level of students in key subjects will also be assessed through written tests.

Once approved, the assessment will be conducted at the beginning of the school year and every two school years thereafter or as recommended by the local school board.
