1-M signature campaign vs MMDA bus hub launched

Mike Frialde - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Coalition of Filipino Consumers (CFC) yesterday vowed to gather one million signatures of commuters affected by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA)’s plan to install central bus terminals in the metropolis.

Calling their campaign the “1 Million Cry of the Filipino Commuters,” the gathered signatures will be part of a petition seeking to suspend the implementation of Administrative Order No. 40 signed by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr.

The AO mandates the MMDA to establish interim bus terminals in Metro Manila as part of the planned integrated transport system.

Members of CFC said they would march to Malacañang to present their petition before President Aquino on Sept. 21.

CFC volunteers gathered yesterday at the Redemptorist Church in Baclaran, Parañaque to start the signature drive.

Jason Luna, convenor of the CFC, which is an umbrella organization of five urban poor groups, said commuters using the Southwest Integrated Terminal at the Uniwide Coastal Mall continue to suffer.

“We appeal to the President to stop this foolish scheme and be attentive to the plight of the masses,” Luna added.

He said they would launch a series of protest actions if Malacañang would not hear their plea.
