Pagasa: Watch for Aurigids meteor showers

MANILA, Philippines - Stargazers in the country can watch out for the Aurigids meteor showers tomorrow, the state weather bureau said yesterday.

Dario dela Cruz, chief of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) space sciences and astronomy section, said the public can see a maximum of six meteors per hour under good sky conditions.

Dela Cruz said the best time to observe the meteors is between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m.

The Aurigids meteor shower radiates from the constellation Auriga, which is located in the eastern horizon.

The United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration said meteors come from leftover comet particles and bits from broken asteroids. When comets come around the sun, the dust they emit gradually spreads into a dusty trail around their orbits.

Many meteor showers are recurring phenomena and their appearance can be predicted.
