Backhoe operator pleads not guilty

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The backhoe operator who allegedly dug the graves of the victims in the 2009 Maguindanao massacre pleaded not guilty during trial proceedings yesterday at a makeshift court in Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan, Taguig City.

Bong Andal entered his plea before Quezon City Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes. He was the 101st suspect arraigned for the massacre.

Andal was brought back to the Philippine National Police Custodial Center in Camp Crame, Quezon City following his arraignment.

Court staff said the prosecution panel did not raise the issue of Andal’s detention during yesterday’s proceedings.

Earlier, Solis-Reyes ordered the transfer of Andal to Camp Bagong Diwa after the prosecution withdrew its intention to use him as a state witness.
