Inmate runs amuck at Bilibid

MANILA, Philippines - An inmate with alleged mental problems ran amuck in the hospital of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) on Thursday night.

A source in the state penitentiary told The STAR that the inmate broke into the hospital’s ward No. 4 “possible to create trouble among the staff.”

“He was able to get inside because the three hospital guards were sleeping,” the source said, adding these “guards” are also inmates of NBP who are considered trustees.

A commotion at the ward roused the three, prompting them to rush to room and try to bring the inmate out. The inmate resisted and a brawl ensued, but neither the hospital staff nor their patients were hurt.

The source said the inmate and the three guards are under investigation.
