MANILA, Philippines - At least 50 street dwellers mostly children and women were rounded up by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Pasay City policemen at dawn yesterday.
The street dwellers were rounded up while sleeping in sidewalks and center island along EDSA Extension and Buendia Avenue, according to city social welfare officer Rosalinda Orobia.
They were brought to the DSWD office and given assistance.
Last week, authorities rounded up some 100 streetchildren in various parts of Pasay.
Chief Superintendent Jose Erwin Villacorte, Southern Police District director, said the operation is being carried out regularly in response to reports that minor offenders were involved in snatching incidents and victimizing jeepney and taxi passengers during rush hour.
The minors were brought to the Pasay City Youth Home while others were turned over to their respective families.
