Probers check slain ex-NBI agent’s ‘underground deals’

MANILA, Philippines - Makati City police officers are investigating transactions made by slain former National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agent John Herra, Southern Police District director Chief Superintendent Jose Erwin Villacorte said yesterday.

“We are looking into his (alleged) underground dealings,” he told The STAR in a text message, but refused to divulge the nature of these deals.

“We want to check out and countercheck leads,” he said without elaborating.

Herra, who was fired from the NBI in 2001 for alleged misconduct, was shot dead Saturday morning by a man who pretended to be a customer at the Republic of Fitness Gym in Makati City.

One of Herra’s high-profile assignments was as a security escort of Vizconde massacre star witness Jessica Alfaro, whom he accused of being a “fake witness” in 2010.
