Retired soldier shoots ex-presidential guard

MANILA, Philippines - A retired military officer shot a retired presidential guard during a fight yesterday morning in Nagtahan, Sta. Mesa, Manila.

Alexander Barcia, 58, was taken to the De Ocampo Medical Center but was transferred to the Philippine General Hospital.

Hever Macaraeg, 53, a neighbor of the victim, was arrested by Manila Police District operatives after the incident and was taken to MPD Station 8, where he is now detained.

Macaraeg did not elaborate on what happened but told investigators he only acted in self-defense because Barcia took a knife and wanted to stab him.
