MANILA, Philippines - A businessman was allegedly shot by his own father yesterday following a heated argument over their religious beliefs.
Godwin Alvarez, 34, underwent surgery at the MCU Hospital after he was shot in the back by his father, Ernesto Alvarez, 55, case investigator Senior Police Officer 3 Ferdinand Espiritu said.
The elder Alvarez reportedly told his son, “Hindi ako ordinaryong ama (I am not an ordinary father),†just before shooting him, Espiritu said.
Godwin was fixing an alarm panel in their house in Barangay Potrero, Malabon City at past 8 a.m. when his father approached him and pointed a gun at his shoulder, Espiritu said.
A witness told police that the gun initially malfunctioned when Ernesto pulled the trigger the first time. Police said the victim sustained a gunshot wound in his back when his father pulled the trigger again.
Espiritu said the two men argued over their religious beliefs prior to the shooting. He did not elaborate on the nature of the argument.
The elder Alvarez fled following the shooting, he said, adding that investigators recovered a used 9mm cartridge case at the scene.
