QC urged to promote rainwater harvesting technology

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Quezon City Council is urging the city government to promote the use of rainwater harvesting technology to mitigate water shortages and ensure sufficient water supply in the city.

In a resolution, Councilor Aly Medalla said the Department of Environment and Natural Resources earlier urged local government units to consider rainwater harvesting technology as a solution to the problem of water shortage and flooding experienced in the country.

This technology can be relied upon in providing enough water supply even in times of natural disasters in the country, the resolution stated.

In most parts of the country, including Quezon City, rainwater can be collected and then purified in local central treatment systems that will be pumped to various water lines, it added.

In her resolution, Medalla said Capiz province started using the rainwater harvesting technology as early as 1989 and has become an income generation initiative of the province.
