MANILA, Philippines - Domestic helpers can demand appropriate wages under the newly enacted Kasambahay Law, Republic Act 10361, starting this month, the National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC) said yesterday.
Under the new law, a domestic helper working in Metro Manila shall receive not less than P2,500 pay a month, the NWPC said.
Those employed in major cities and municipalities must receive a monthly salary not lower than P2,000 while the monthly minimum pay in other areas is pegged at P1,500.
The NPWC said domestic helpers are now also entitled to receive 13th month pay and benefits from the Social Security System (SSS), PhilHealth and Pag-IBIG Fund.
According to NPWC, the employer shall shoulder the monthly contribution for the SSS, PhilHealth and Pag-IBIG membership unless the domestic helper is getting a monthly pay not less than P5,000.
Domestic helpers who have worked with employers for more than a year shall also receive annual service incentive leave with pay.
The new law also prohibits hiring those who are younger than 15 years old as domestic helpers.
To ensure compliance with the law, the Department of Labor and Employment is setting up a regulation and licensing system for private employment agencies recruiting household helpers.
The NPWC said those found guilty of violating the law shall be fined between P10,000 and P40,000.
