Man tries to kill mom-in-law with ‘pla-pla’

MANILA, Philippines - A man was arrested yesterday morning for attempting to kill his mother-in-law with a “pla-pla,” an illegal firecracker, in Binondo, Manila.

Melinda de Jesus, 54, a resident of 420 Area C, Gate 54, Parola Compound, suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized after the former live-in partner of her daughter hurled the illegal firecracker at her while she was sleeping in her house. 

Victorino Calma, 34, was arrested by responding village watchmen and detained at the Manila Police District-Station 11.

Station commander Superintendent Alex Navarette said the suspect had harbored a grudge against De Jesus for tolerating her daughter’s affair, which led to their separation.
