Tondo barangay chief shot dead

MANILA, Philippines - A barangay chairman in Tondo, Manila was gunned down Monday night.

Barangay 101 Zone 8 chairman Saturnino Grutas, 46, died on the way to the Chinese General Hospital after he was attacked at around 6:10 p.m. while he was walking toward his electronics shop on Juan Luna street, police said.

Manila Police District homicide section chief Inspector Ismael dela Cruz said Grutas was arrested in 2009 and charged for the murder of Rogelio Maco in Vitas. His co-accused, barangay tanod Elton Santuile, remains at large. Investigators said they cannot explain why Grutas was released or what happened to the case.

Dela Cruz said the victim was reportedly also charged with malversation.
