Jeepney driver slain in Malabon robbery

MANILA, Philippines - Robbers shot dead a driver for refusing to stop his passenger jeepney during a highway robbery in Malabon City Sunday night.

Efren Balderama, 44, a resident of Barangay Panghulo, died on the way to the Malabon City community hospital.

Police Officer 3 Rommel Habig said Balderama was driving his jeepney along P. Aquino street in Barangay Tonsuya when two men boarded the vehicle at around 6:30 p.m.

The men pulled out a handgun and a knife and robbed the passengers. Another man, who boarded the jeepney ahead of the two robbers, joined in collecting the victims’ belongings.

After the heist, the armed men told Balderama to stop but he did not heed them until one of the robbers shot him in the back.

The robbers jumped off the jeepney with the loot and fled toward a shantytown near the highway.
