Taiwanese exec slain in botched heist

- Jerry Botial - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A Taiwanese warehouse manager was found dead after what authorities believe was a failed robbery attempt in Caloocan City yesterday.

Newly installed city police chief Senior Superintendent Rimas Calixto identified the slain victim as Andy Wang, 28, of the Wei Dynamic Service Center on Macabagdal street.

The facility is a wholesaler of television sets with used parts imported from China, refurbished, re-assembled and distributed locally under the Astro brand, according to workers interviewed by The STAR.

Investigators said Wang may have been hit on the forehead with a blunt object and his throat slit with a hacksaw.

Anna Wei, 26, a sister-in-law of the firm’s owners, said she found Wang’s body on the second-floor office of the warehouse at around 6 a.m., two hours before they usually open for business. Witnesses said Wei went into hysterics and collapsed.

Police believe the victim put up a fight as the office was in disarray and food kept in the refrigerator were scattered in the room when the victim was found.

A steel vault embedded on the concrete wall of the office beside the victim’s table was found with drill holes but unopened. Secretary Mylene Alcano said the vault contained P400,000 in cash, bank passbooks and checks amounting to several millions of pesos. She said only Wang’s cellular phone was missing.
