P-Noy graces Quezon-Araneta underpass inauguration

MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino and other government officials inaugurated yesterday a P452-million underpass at the intersection of Quezon and Araneta Avenues.

In a brief program, Aquino congratulated Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Rogelio Singson for saving almost P100 million in project cost. Singson earlier said the underpass construction cost was way below the approved budget of P534 million.

The President also lauded the DPWH and the project contractors for the early opening of the underpass, which was expected to be finished by December. Construction started in July 2011.

The inauguration was attended by Speaker Feliciano Belmonte, Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista, Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte and other local officials.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino assured the public that the underpass will not get flooded. “It wasn’t flooded during the recent onslaught of the Habagat,” he said, citing the three submersible pumps that were installed by the DPWH.

The DPWH also said it installed water cisterns, reinforced concrete box, and pipe culverts to help manage the flood.

Bautista said they are coordinating with the MMDA on the maintenance of the underpass. “Maybe we’ll use the P100-million savings to manage the area, which is really flood-prone,” he said.
