PNP postpones fete due to floods

- Bebot Sison Jr., Cecille Suerte Felipe - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police (PNP) postponed indefinitely the 111th anniversary celebration of the police service, scheduled today, following continuous rainfall in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

In a text message, PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent Generoso Cebro Jr. said the PNP units are at the forefront of rescue and relief operations in areas badly affected by almost two days of heavy rains.

“The PNP Gala Night was likewise cancelled to give more time and focus to rescue and relief efforts being undertaken by the PNP to victims of flooding brought about by incessant monsoon rains,” Cerbo said.

President Aquino is supposed to personally confer awards to eight police officers for their excellent performance as part of the 111th anniversary of the police service.

“We celebrate on Aug. 8 the anniversary of the police service in commemoration of the founding of the Philippine Constabulary on Aug. 8, 1901, and the Integrated National Police on Aug. 8, 1975, both forerunner organizations of the PNP,” PNP chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome.

The awardees are Senior Superintendent Noel Constantino, best senior police commissioned officer for administration; Senior Superintendent Teodoro Basa, best senior police commissioned officer for operations; Chief Inspector Julius Balano, best junior police commissioned officer of the year; SPO1 Wilfredo Guillema Jr., best senior police non-commissioned officer; PO3 Danny Gaces, best junior police non-commissioned officer; Teresa Vicente, best non-uniformed personnel (supervisory level); and Ranelo Christian Tiongco, best non-uniformed personnel (non-supervisory level).

Bartolome said Danao police chief Inspector Norman Nuez, recipient of the third Lead PNP award, will receive special awards and plaques of heroism will be given to PO2 Elrich Jourdin Catacutan of Region 7 and the late SPO2 Rovelie Laggui of Region 2.

The PNP chief said a plaque of merit will be given to Highway Patrol Group for its significant accomplishment against car theft.
