Las Piñas to rev up cleanliness drive

MANILA, Philippines - Las Piñas Mayor Vergel Aguilar called on residents yesterday to maintain a clean and orderly environment to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases during the rainy season.

The appeal was made as the mayor ordered the city health department and the city’s sanitation office to continue their cleanup drive, particularly in areas that could be possible breeding grounds for disease-carrying organisms.

Several teams from the city engineering and health departments were mobilized to declog waterways and canals to prevent flooding and ensure that no rodent or dengue-carrying mosquito would breed in them.

He said the city government and the residents’ efforts have resulted in a 10 percent decrease in dengue cases from January to June compared to the same period last year.
