1 dead, 4 hurt as jeep hits van, taxi in Caloocan
Manila, Philippines - A passenger was killed while four of his companions were hurt when the jeepney they were riding rammed a delivery van and a taxi in Caloocan City Thursday night.
Senior Police Officer 1 Lito Sanchez said Esperidion Salvador, 52, a resident of Bagong Silang, died from head and body injuries when he was thrown from the passenger jeepney (DGZ-280) driven by Celso Francisco.
Four other passengers – Marialyn Catamora, Mary Grace Almadin, Rowell Cantoner and Majon Tabago – were brought to the Tala Hospital for treatment of head and body injuries, some of them serious, Sanchez told The STAR.
He said the jeepney was traveling down Barugo street in Sitio Matarik, Camarin when its brakes failed at around 8:15 p.m. The driver lost control of the jeepney, which rear-ended an L-300 van (UAX-353) driven by Judy Sarmiento.
The wayward jeepney stopped when it hit a taxi (UHB-901) driven by Emiliano Castillon. The force of the impact threw Salvador from the front passenger seat of the jeepney.
Francisco surrendered to the traffic police officers and was charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple physical injuries.
