Teen hangs self after scolding

MANILA, Philippines - A teenage girl committed suicide Friday after her mother admonished her for not doing her chores.

Rey Jean Hernando, 18, had just graduated from Juan Sumulong High School but hanged herself in their house in Barangay Bagong Bayan, Quezon City on Friday afternoon, said PO3 Modestino Juanson.

The girl’s body was found at around 5 p.m. by her younger sister, Kimberly, in the living room.

With the help of neighbors, Rey Jean was rushed to Quirino Memorial Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival.

The girl’s mother, Jean-Nanie, said Rey Jean had attempted to commit suicide before.

Jean-Nanie said she last saw her daughter alive at past 2 p.m. in the living room. Before she left, the mother reprimanded her daughter and told her to cook or they would have nothing to eat.

She believes this could not have pushed her daughter to commit suicide. She said there must be something else that pushed her daughter to take her own life.
