UP heist victim out of coma

- Reinir Padua -

MANILA, Philippines -  A student who was seriously injured in the Feb. 1 robbery at the University of the Philippines in Diliman campus is now “out of coma,” her mother said yesterday.

Connie Hina said her daughter Lordei Camille has opened her right eye but her doctor said the victim’s “wakefulness is intermittent.”

In an interview, Connie said there have been “little improvements” in the condition of her daughter, who remains confined at Capitol Medical Center.

“But she’s still not totally out of danger... until I am able to talk to her... The risk of infection is still there,” the victim’s mother said.

According to Connie, Lordei Camille’s heart rate has not normalized. She also cannot talk yet.

The political science major was repeatedly stabbed with an ice pick and hit with a trophy during the robbery at the University Student Council’s office in Vinzons Hall.

The ice pick pierced the victim’s brain, while the beating left her with skull fragments embedded in her brain, her mother said.

Meanwhile, the arrested suspect in the robbery has been charged in court.

Dan Mar Vicencio, 38, was charged with robbery and illegal possession of a bladed weapon yesterday morning. The fiscal set bail of P180,000 for the case of robbery with violence or intimidation. The inquest prosecutor also recommended a separate bail of P2,000 for the case for illegal possession of a bladed weapon.

The complaint against Vicencio’s alleged cohort, Dante Santos, will be subjected to a preliminary investigation as he is still at large.
