UP student wounded in robbery at student council office

MANILA, Philippines - A student of the University of the Philippines in Quezon City was wounded in a robbery at the university’s student council (USC) office on the second floor of Vinzon's Hall last Wednesday afternoon.

Superintendent Michael Macapagal, commander of Station 9 of the Quezon City police, said Lordei Camille Anjuli Hina, 20, a fourth-year political science student, was hit in the head with a trophy by one the suspects.

“So far, her vital signs have improved although we cannot say yet that she’s out of danger,” the victim’s mother said.

Macapagal said one of the suspects, Carlo Pelayo, 35, of Antipolo, Rizal, was arrested following the attack, while another escaped.

Police recovered a bag, which contained two laptop computers, an external drive and a flash drive. A 12-inch ice pick was also seized from the suspect.

Macapagal said Pelayo and his companion told the guard at the ground floor of Vinzon’s Hall that they were band members and wanted to inquire about the upcoming UP fair.

“But the person in charge of the matter wasn’t there, prompting them to leave the student council office,” the police official said.

Pelayo went up again when the victim’s companion went down to buy food.

Danilo Arao, UP assistant vice president for public affairs, said the security guard posted at the ground floor of the building accosted Pelayo when he noticed that the latter was carrying a bag when he left the building.
