Manila cop killed

MANILA, Philippines – A Manila policeman was shot dead at the Baseco compound in Port Area, Manila Tuesday night.

PO1 Edchelle Ayon, 34, who was assigned at the Bagong Lupa community precinct, died from multiple gunshot wounds in different parts of the body.

His alleged assailant was identified as Alex Rasul Alang, 47, a jeepney driver.

Senior Inspector Joey de Ocampo, who heads the homicide section of the Manila Police District, said Ayon and PO2 Joseph Gabe were patrolling the compound when they chanced upon Alang, who was acting suspiciously.

As the two policemen approached, Alang pulled a gun and shot Ayon several times. Although wounded, Ayon returned fire and hit Alang in the abdomen. The suspect is confined at the Gat Andres Bonifacio Hospital.    – Sandy Araneta, Nestor Etolle
