BOC seizes P35-M red onions

- Evelyn Macairan -

MANILA, Philippines - The Bureau of Customs (BOC) seized yesterday P35.6 million worth of red onions – about 297,000 kilos – that were reportedly smuggled in 11 40-foot shipping containers from China to the Manila International Container Port (MICP) last month.

Two of the containers were consigned to Widsets Trading in Malate; Binondo-based Royal Halo Enterprises brought in five containers; and Aldero Enterprises was the consignee for the other four container vans.

BOC-MICP district collector Ricardo Belmonte said the onions were misdeclared as household goods. BOC Commissioner Rufino Biazon said the onions will be destroyed.
