Korean businessman slain in San Juan

- Jose Rodel Clapano, Non Alquitran -

MANILA, Philippines - A Korean businessman with interests in the mining industry was killed in an early morning ambush staged by two men on a motorcycle at a street corner in Greenhills, San Juan City yesterday.

San Juan police chief Senior Superintendent Ranier Espina said Hyung Koor, 59, was declared dead on the spot by Scene of the Crime Operations (SOCO) personnel. Hyung suffered two gunshot wounds, one in the face and the other in his right arm.

Espina said the victim’s driver, Mark Anthony Casayuran, was about to park his employer’s Ford Expedition in front of the UCC coffee shop along Connecticut street when the gunmen, riding a red motorcycle, approached them from behind at around 8:30 a.m.

“The back rider peeped through the light tint of the vehicle (window), took out his handgun and opened fire upon making sure that it was Hyung who was seated at the back seat,” Casayuran told police investigators.

Casayuran was hit by splinters from the shattered window glass and suffered minor injuries. He was released after being treated at a nearby hospital.

The attackers fled toward the San Juan City proper, witnesses said.

Responding SOCO operatives lifted fingerprints of the gunman from the right side door, where he looked through the window to see the victim prior to the shooting.

A police artist is preparing sketches of the gunmen based on the description of a security guard who witnessed the incident. Investigators have yet to establish a motive for Hyung’s murder.
