1 dead, 15 hurt in 6-vehicle collision

MANILA, Philippines - One person was killed, while 15 others were injured when a bus bound for Baclaran, hit a jeepney, which bumped into four other vehicles in an accident yesterday morning in Lawton, Manila.

SPO3 Sergio Macaraig, investigator of the Manila Police District (MPD) Traffic Bureau, identified the fatality as Rolando Sunga Roldan, 56, of Block 10, Lot 13, Modesto Street, Springville Heights, Camella, Molino 7, Bacoor, Cavite.

He said the victim, who died on the spot, was about to cross the street, when the Earth Star Express bus (PWG-638) hit him. Two jeepneys, two FX cabs and another bus also figured in the accident.

The driver and conductor of Earth Star Express managed to escape.

Those injured were on board a jeepney that was hit by Express Star bus. They were brought to the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center, Philippine General Hospital Ospital ng Maynila and University of Santo Tomas Hospital for minor injuries.

Meanwhile, Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim said he will order a study on whether to continue to allow buses to ply the routes of Manila following the incident.

He also ordered the immediate arrest of the bus driver and conductor and the filing of charges against those responsible for the incident.
