Suspect in Tondo drive-by shooting shot by rival

MANILA, Philippines - A man who allegedly killed a housewife and wounded three others in last week’s drive-by shooting in Tondo, Manila was put in the Manila Police District (MPD) jail yesterday.

The gunman, James Bryan Dean, alias “JB Demonyo,” a known neighborhood toughie, was jailed after being confined at the MCU Hospital when he was shot in the chest by a member of a rival gang right after the drive-by shooting.

Police said Dean, riding with a companion and without any provocation, shot at a group of residents along Coral street past 11 p.m. Four were hit in the shooting. 

Angelita Santos was declared dead on arrival at the Mary Johnston Hospital for a gunshot wound in the waist. Rodolfo Garcia, 65, a barangay tanod, was operated for a bullet wound in the buttocks at the Gat Andres Bonifacio Hospital. Also at the same hospital is Blas Antonio, 43, who was treated for a bullet wound in the left foot. Alexander Martin, a 15-year-old student, was treated at the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center for a gunshot wound in the right foot.

Chief Inspector Armando Macaraeg, who heads the MPD homicide section, said it was a certain “JR Bait” who shot Dean. JR was reportedly waiting in ambush for Dean when he passed by right after the drive-by shooting.

Both Dean and JR were involved in shootings in the past, but they always managed to elude arrest, Macaraeg said.

Dean is facing murder and frustrated murder charges, while a manhunt has been launched for JR.
