MMDA launches web-based traffic navigator

- Aie Balagtas See -

MANILA, Philippines - Traffic condition in the metropolis can now be monitored via the Internet.

In his weekly radio program, Metro Manila Development Authority(MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino said motorists can access the information on the agency’s website www.mmda.gov.ph starting today.

Tolentino said the navigator would complement the MMDA’s Twitter account, which they have been using to give road users information on the traffic condition.

MMDA spokesman Tina Velasco said the navigator will initially cover EDSA, Quezon Avenue, Espana in Manila, Roxas Boulevard, and the South Luzon Expressway.

Velasco said roads with smooth traffic flow will be lighted green, and red for those with a big volume of vehicles.

“We’re not saying this is a solution to traffic [but to help people] make decisions based on the information,” Velasco said in the same radio program.

She said the navigator will be updated every 15 minutes by the agency’s metro base led by lawyer Yves Gonzales.

Tolentino said they are eyeing a similar navigator for flood prone areas to inform motorists which roads are submerged during the rainy season.

An animated navigator showing road accidents to inform motorists about the areas to avoid is also forthcoming.
