Family of OFW who died saving ward to get financial aid
MANILA, Philippines - The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) said yesterday it is providing financial assistance to the family of the Filipino worker who died saving the life of her ward in Hong Kong.
OWWA chief Carmelita Dimzon said the family of 31-year-old Juanita Limbago will get P220,000 in accident and burial benefits from the agency. She said they will turn the checks over to Limbago’s husband, Edwin.
Limbago died last June 11 after a speeding tour bus hit her while accompanying her six-year-old ward to school. She left the country last March to work in Hong Kong.
Limbago and her ward were crossing the street when the bus hit them. Limbago used her body to protect the boy. She died on the spot while her ward suffered minor injuries.
Dimzon said OWWA will also provide a lawyer to help Limbago’s family sue the bus firm and driver involved in the accident. She said OWWA extended help in the repatriation of Limbago’s remains. – Mayen Jaymalin, Rudy Santos
