Caloocan backs MMDA anti-littering drive
MANILA, Philippines - Caloocan City Mayor Enrico Echiverri said yesterday he will back the call of Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino to strictly enforce the anti-littering law.
Echiverri’s show of support to Tolentino follows the MMDA chairman’s request for all local government units (LGUs) to pass ordinances against littering through their respective councils.
According to MMDA records, over 21,000 persons have been apprehended for indiscriminately throwing garbage in the street ever since the agency enforced the Metro Manila Council anti-littering regulation in September 2010.
The anti-littering ordinance violators were fined P500 to P1,000 and ordered to do community service in their respective barangays.
Although hauling garbage from each home is no longer a problem in Caloocan, Echiverri enjoined residents to maintain cleanliness in their barangays.
“One way of mitigating the effect of worsening climate is to keep the environment clean, which may seem a small step but this would definitely go a long way in our fight against global warming,” he said.
