MANILA, Philippines - The Navotas City government warned motorists against driving under the influence during the holidays or face arrest for violating a city ordinance against drunk driving.
Mayor John Rey Tiangco directed the other day the Navotas police, City Traffic and Parking Management Office (CTPMO), Task Force Disiplina (TFD) and barangay officials to strictly enforce Ordinance 2004-13 this Christmas season.
The mayor warned holiday revelers to be responsible enough not to drink and drive to avoid accidents. He said people should be extra careful, especially since it is the time for Christmas parties and get-togethers.
“We intend to stop drunk driving to ensure public safety, especially this Christmas season. It’s a season for parties but if people want to drink liquor we encourage them to drink responsibly and always have a designated driver who will stay sober,” Tiangco said.
CTPMO chief James Lopez said traffic enforcers would be fielded at night throughout Navotas, particularly near entertainment establishments and offices.
Motorists suspected of drunk driving will be brought to the Navotas Emergency and Lying-in Clinic for mandatory testing, he said.
Personnel manning the 24-hour Navotas Action Center and the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras are now on alert for drunk drivers.
“We want to ensure everyone has a merry Christmas by keeping people safe from irresponsible drivers,” Tiangco said.
Under Ordinance 2004-13, the Navotas Traffic Code, a fine of P2,500, imprisonment, or both will be imposed on drunk drivers.
