MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police (PNP) leadership will not yet impose a one-strike policy for police commanders who fail to stop armed robberies in their areas of jurisdiction.
PNP spokesman Senior Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr. said local police units started conducting thorough investigations on the robberies in Manila and Parañaque City last Sunday, both involving jewelry shops.
In the Parañaque heist, robbers bought hammers at a mall and smashed the glass display cases of the jewelry shop, located in the same mall.
“The investigation will determine the liability of police officers in area where robbers struck,” Cruz said.
He said the PNP has intensified efforts against criminal groups but police officers could not just enter malls, which have their own security arrangement.
“We will coordinate with security agencies and security officers to be able to establish effective security measures to address crimes,” Cruz added.
The PNP spokesman said police officials initially suggested that malls allow uniformed police officers to assist security guards at the entrance of the malls.
As part of long-term measures, Cruz added that the PNP intends to provide security guards basic training in searching bags and luggages of mall customers without too much delay.
