Man tries to rescue stabbing victim, gets killed

MANILA, Philippines - A house helper was killed when he attempted to rescue a woman from a knife-wielding attacker in Barangay Karuhatan, Valenzuela City Saturday.

Wilson Cabana died of stab wounds in the body while undergoing treatment at the Valenzuela Medical Center.

Senior Police Officer 2 Richie Garcia said the suspect, Anthony Ubina escaped and is now the subject of a manhunt.

Garcia said Ubina barged into the room of Marie Fe Ando on Cayetano street at around 5:30 a.m. Cabana later saw Ando, her clothes stained with blood, running on the street with Ubina pursuing her.

Cabana came to the assistance of the wounded woman but was also stabbed by the suspect. Ubina escaped after the incident.

The victims were brought to the Valenzuela Medical Center but Cabana died. Ando remains in critical condition in the same hospital, Garcia said.

Garcia said they have yet to determine Ubina’s motive for the attack.

Valenzuela City police chief Senior Superintendent Eric Serafin Reyes directed his men to track down Ubina at his residence in Marilao, Bulacan but the suspect was no longer in the area.

The local police were trying to coordinate yesterday with their counterparts in Cagayan Valley, where Ubina has roots.
