Bus sideswipes 3 on motorbike; 2 dead, 1 hurt

MANILA, Philippines – Two men were killed while their companion was critically injured when a speeding passenger bus sideswiped the victims’ motorcycle Saturday night in Caloocan City.

Senior Inspector Abner Castro, city police traffic enforcement chief, said Jerry Medina, 21, and Jayvee Jhun Castro, 24, died while being treated at the Dr. Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center.

John Robert Castro, 24, who also suffered severe head and body injuries, was still confined at the Manila Central University (MCU) Hospital as of yesterday.

Police Officer 2 Ferdinand Manapat said the victims were onboard a motorcycle (DQ-8670), driven by Jayvee Jhun, when they were sideswiped by a speeding Dongfeng bus (TYJ-898) at the corner of 5th Avenue and C-3 Road at around 11:15 p.m.

The three were thrown off their motorcycle. None of the victims wore a helmet.

Manapat said Medina, a graduating nursing student, was accompanying the Castro cousins, Jayvee John and John Robert, back to their house on 11th Avenue when the accident occurred.

“The victims just came out of Medina’s house on 4th Avenue where the latter celebrated his birthday,” Manapat told The STAR.

Melvin Doria, 36, the bus driver, surrendered to the police. He is facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in double and homicide, and serious physical injuries.
