Ambushed cop says mystery woman 'an old friend'

MANILA, Philippines - A police official who survived an ambush in Quezon City last March 10 said the “mystery woman” who was with him at the time is “an old friend.”

Superintendent Napoleon Cauyan said Glecy Perez was just helping him and his close friends register their vehicle with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Barangay Pinyahan.

He dismissed the possibility that Perez set him up for the ambush. “I’ve known her for a long time. She cannot do that to me because in the first place she had no idea that I was coming to her place,” Cauyan told The Star.

Cauyan refused to say whether Perez is connected with the LTO or not. The STAR reached Cauyan yesterday to get his reaction over the mystery woman in his car at the time of the ambush.

“She’s just an old acquaintance, nothing more,” he said.

Cauyan corroborated Perez statements that they were talking inside the car, with the engine on, when they noticed a motorcycle slowly approaching them from behind.

When he saw the gunman pointing his firearm at their direction, Cauyan said he pushed Perez to the floor of the car.

Cauyan said the gunman emptied his MK5 machine pistol and was about to reload when he stepped on the gas pedal and drove towards a crowded area.

When Perez rushed out and disappeared, Cauyan said he kicked the car’s left front door open and he rolled onto the ground. He said bystanders helped him flag down a tricycle and directed its driver to bring him to the hospital.

Cauyan said he could not fathom who could be behind the failed ambush on him. “My case is too deep,” he told The STAR.

Cauyan refused to reveal what he told Director Roberto Rosales, chief of the National Capital Region Police Office, regarding the possible motive behind the ambush try.

Earlier, Cauyan dismissed the possibility that the attack on him is related to the killing of jueteng whistle-blower Wilfredo “Boy” Mayor in Pasay City last Feb. 28.

Rosales said they have had no breakthrough in Mayor’s case.
