MANILA, Philippines – National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Director Roberto Rosales ordered yesterday more cops to go on mobile and foot patrols in Metro Manila’s slum areas to prevent violence following boxing icon Manny Pacquiao’s victory over Ghana native Joshua Clottey.
“We expect Filipinos to celebrate the victory of Pacquiao by drinking in the streets,” said Rosales. “So, it is just proper for us to increase our presence through our mobile and foot patrol to quell violence.”
The five police districts in Metro Manila also recorded no crimes for the duration of the boxing bout, which was shown on a delayed basis in a local TV station.
Reports received by Rosales also showed that the busy streets and thoroughfares of Metro Manila were empty in the duration of the boxing match.
“Our Filipinos are glued to their TV sets. There are only a few vehicles plying the streets,” he said. – Non Alquitran
