The workshop is geared toward the prevention of discriminate disposal of wastes at sea which are considered harmful to human health and the environment, PCG commandant Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo said.

The PCG will be sending 60 participants to the workshop that will be held between

Feb. 15 to Feb. 18 in Pasay City. There will also be participants from other government agencies such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources .

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) experts from the United Kingdom, United States and Australia would also be present at the event. During the meeting, they would introduce the 1996 version of the London Dumping Protocol.

This protocol is one of the first global conventions intended to protect the marine environment from human activities and has been in effect since 1975. Its main objective is to promote the effective control of all sources of marine pollution and to take all practicable steps to prevent pollution of the sea by dumping of wastes and other matters.
