MMDA: Use only Comelec common poster areas

- Mike Frialde -

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority yesterday called on all candidates in the May 10 polls to put their campaign posters only in places designated as common poster areas by the Comelec.

MMDA Chairman Oscar Inocentes said the agency’s Roadway and Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group will intensify its campaign to rid the metropolis of all illegally placed campaign posters.

“We will tear down all campaign posters irrespective of political parties or affiliations,” Inocentes said.

According to Inocentes, the illegally placed campaign posters are not only eyesores, but also violate the provisions of the Fair Elections Act regarding the use of common poster areas.

Inocentes particularly called the attention of his predecessor, Bayani Fernando, who is now running as vice president under the Bagumbayan ticket of Senator Richard Gordon.

“Being a former chairman, he (Fernando) knows that there are rules to be implemented.  These candidates should be good examples for their followers to emulate,” said Inocentes.

Inocentes said the MMDA will not hesitate to file the appropriate charges against candidates and their respective political parties if they would be found to have violated the Comelec rules covering election posters.

Meanwhile, Inocentes said the MMDA is still waiting for the Comelec to pass a resolution that would give it the authority to become the lead agency in the clearing of illegal campaign posters.

According to the MMDA, personnel from the RSCOG have so far removed illegally-placed campaign posters along Taft Avenue in Manila, Monumento Circle in Caloocan City, and along Quezon Avenue, and Ramon Magsaysay Boulevard in Quezon City.
