MANILA, Philippines - Quezon City began yesterday the celebraton of “Linggo ng Kabataan” with youths taking the centerstage as the city pays tribute to them in the weeklong observance which will be the election of the counterparts of the elected and appointed city officials, to act as youth officials.
Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr. formally opened the celebration during yesterday’s flag rasing ceremony at the City Hall grounds.
The mayor cited the important role played by the youth in shaping up the future of the nation.
This year’s “Linggo ng Kabataan” celebration, which has theme “Kabataan May Magagawa Ka… Maaasahan Ka ng Bayan,” will focus mainly on election awareness campaign.
The city government has invited 140 student leaders from different QC public schools to participate in a screening process to determine the most qualified student representatives.
The student leaders were made to undergo training on basic parliamentary practice procedure for the counterpart positions.
Belmonte has religiously pursued a policy of giving oppurtunity to youth leaders as he underscored the vital role they play in the task of nation-building.
The 1991 Local Government Code provides for the celebration of the “Linggo ng Kabataan” throughout the country every second week of December to give more meaning to the participation of the youth in nation-building.
The mayor earlier issued an executive order creating an executive committee to oversee the citywide celebration of Youth Week.
