Military doctor survives ambush try

MANILA, Philippines - A military doctor assigned at the Fort Bonifacio General Hospital was hurt in an ambush attempt along the East Ser-vice Road in Barangay Western Bicutan Tuesday night.

Chief Inspector Eufronio Obong Jr. of the Taguig Police Station investigation and detective management section said Col. Joselito Lonzame, 49, was driving his Mitsubishi Lancer along the East Service Road on his way home to Barangay Sucat, Muntinlupa City when he was attacked.

Police said the victim and his daughter, a 21-year-old volunteer nurse at the same hospital, neared the Heritage Park at around 6 p.m., the gunmen, who were in a silver Toyota Innova, shot at Lonzame and hit him in the neck.

The attackers fled towards the southbound lane of C5 Road.

Lonzame managed to alight from his vehicle and using the blood from his wound, wrote the name “Col. Añonuevo” on the back of the car.

His daughter brought him to the Taguig District Hospital for treatment. Lonzame was later transferred to the V. Luna Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. Doctors have declared him out of danger.

Crime scene investigators, led by Chief Inspector Richard Allan Mangalip, recovered a .45 caliber shell and one deformed slug of unknown caliber.

Police investigators said the name Lonzame wrote on the back of his car could be a suspect in the incident.Senior Superintendent Camilo Cascolan, Taguig police chief, said they are trying to locate the suspect and determine the motive behind the ambush try.
